Grange Video – Mitchel Dubois

Please check out this wonderful video, made for Mitchel Dubois, a 72 yr. old homeless amputee. PHR raised $2,600 EC for the Kimberly fund, to help him find a home at the Grange Home for the Aged.

GREAT SUCCESS at Culture Night Fundraiser!!!

PHR raised $2,600 EC for Kimberly fund, to help Mitchel Dubois, a 72 yr. old homeless amputee, find a home at the Grange Home for the Ages. Yuankai ‘Vincent’ Lin, a PHR volunteer met Mr. Dubois a few times through home visits with Espwa Dominika, and took the initiative to ensure that Mr. Dubois finds a home. Vincent put together a great video to help the fundraiser and it was a GREAT success! Congratulations Vincent! We at PHR would like to THANK everyone for your donations. Thank you for making a difference in someone’s life. Congratulations to all the officers and members who came to put the event together.

CALLS Center Students Receive Awards

It is our pleasure to announce that PHR was able to donate $400 EC towards the CALLS Center ‘End of the year Final Assembly’. The money went towards catering the event specifically. The Final Assembly recognizes students w/ specific awards for their work throughout the year.

PHR International Health Policy Meeting

International Health Policy is all aboard and ready to get running with a sprint. Come out to our very first exciting meeting! We’ll be discussing the past and the present starting with those interested in Norah Silver’s project for Dominican Republic and further to begin a very exciting new “Bridging the Gaps” project for this and future semesters! We are looking for many many interested volunteers to get INVOLVED! From small projects like taking photos and expressing artistic needs for the time constricted to bigger involvement in research and writing! Calling all creative minds to help! Come out and enjoy this Friday, Feb. 29th at 4 PM at the Subway Deck! I’ll be wearing the very stylish RED AMSA t-shirt and be easy to spot.

If you have any questions, concerns, or can’t make it to the first meeting but are interested to know more and get involved, please send an e-mail to myself, Monika Siedlarz, or our Representative Maxey McNeese and we’ll be more than glad to answer ASAP!

Kimberly Fund Meeting

We will be having a Kimberly Fund meeting for people who are interested on Friday at 12pm (noon) in PBL room 2. The Kimberly Fund helps local Dominicans in need pay for surgeries that they otherwise would not be able to afford.

Calling all PHR members interested in Women’s Health. Our first meeting for Women’s Health will be will be on Tuesday February 5th, 2008 at 12pm in PBL room #2. Bring your lunch as we come together to explore all your ideas so you can get INVOLVED!! We hope you’re all getting into the groove of the semester. We have changed some of the officer positions, and added a few new people. However, we still have some openings to fill. Are you a motivated student interested in human rights issues both locally and internationally? Having you been waiting for the opportunity to really get involved and help out your community? If so, we’d love to have you. Here are the current open and filled PHR positions:

The “Coordinator” positions require more of a time commitment, as you are responsible for overseeing all of the projects associated with that topic. The “Representative” positions are especially great for first semesters (but anyone can apply), as they are a great initial way to get involved in PHR, and historically the representatives eventually become the coordinator for their topic.

We have many volunteer opportunites for our members this semester. Here are a few of the activities/programs we’ve planned:

CALLS Center Program – Volunteer to tutor a local young person in reading and math. For more information, contact KyungJi@rossmed.edu.dm.

Library Tutoring Program – Help children with their homework, or just read books to them. For more information, contact MohitaPatel@rossmed.edu.dm or NigellePinto@rossmed.edu.dm.

We will be serving an Easter meal for the residents of the Grange Home for the Elderly in Portsmouth. For more information, contact MonicaWilkins@rossmed.edu.dm.

We will be sending plenty more emails throughout the semester with more details, and with more ways to volunteer!

If you’re interested in becoming a coordinator or representative (we really need you!), please contact JohnRichey@rossmed.edu.dm, and tell him what you’d like to do.
