    Tutoring at the Portsmouth Library

Ross PHR Portsmouth Library tutoring program This morning Inem, Austin, Micah and I all took a trip to the Portsmouth Public Library to tutor local students. When we arrived, we were surprised by the librarian who asked us if we were the “French teachers.” Apparently, there was a little miscommunication, because she expected us to be tutoring kids in French. After we explained that we were Ross students there to tutor kids who needed help with their homework, she quickly walked around to find some students. Inem and Austin went to the back of the library to help a few students with history and agriculture. I sat down to help a girl with her Social Studies homework, and Micah began helping a girl (Franchesca) with her math homework.

My first student was pretty interesting because she didn’t want help at first. But eventually she came around and I helped her complete her assignment. It was pretty fun, because I actually had to think! One of her questions was “explain how humans have affected the hydrological cycle.” I had to actually think back to Science class and remember what the hydrological cycle was!

After a while, my first student left and Franchesca needed help with her French class assignment, so Micah and I traded off. Another girl came in with her Social Studies homework, and Micah took over with her. I felt really bad helping Franchesca with her French homework since my French IS REALLY rusty, but we ended up laughing about the whole experience. I would ask her if she should use “le” or “la,” and she would answer me and I’d say, “okay, I’ll take your word for it.”

While I was helping Franchesca, her two little sisters were having a ball playing with their toys on the table. I had an awesome time, and I think Inem, Austin and Micah would all agree that it worked out well. I’m excited about the next time I get to go!

One Response to “Tutoring at the Portsmouth Library”

    1. Flabbergasted says:

Thank you to all the students who volunteered their time this semester at the Portsmouth library, especially Austin! You guys did a great job! The librarians are ecstatic that we brought this program back to the library. There is a HIGH demand for tutors who can teach French. If you are interested in participating in this program, please contact a PHR officer.
